PADDY WHACKED Mrs Brown’s Boys spin-off starring host of ‘talented’ Irish comedians axed after just ONE episode as star ‘disappointed’

 

The half-hour pilot of Mrs Brown star Paddy Houlihan’s show featured an all-star cast including Brendan O’Carroll, comedian Deirdre O’Kane, actor Simon Delaney and Young Offenders star Shane Casey.

The show followed a group of men gathering at an Irish men’s shed to fix things and swap stories.

But despite the BBC transforming a town outside Glasgow into an Irish village for the pilot, Dubliner Paddy, 43, revealed the Beeb have decided to shelve Shedites.

However, he said he received great advice following the knock-back from pal Brendan, who played Jimmy in Shedites — a million miles from his role as Agnes Brown in Mrs Brown.

Paddy told The Irish Sun on ­Sunday: “Of course Brendan was disappointed by the BBC’s decision but no one knows the TV business better than Brendan.

“We had such a talented Irish cast on board with Brendan, and people like Deirdre O’Kane and Simon Delaney.

“They were all totally behind it. Going on the set each day with these people was pure joy. I felt grateful. 

“I also know there are so many talented writers out there whose scripts never make it to screen.

“I feel very fortunate to have got Shedites made.”

However Paddy claims he isn’t giving up all hope of a full series — and says Shedites could turn up on a rival station.

He told us: “Shedites isn’t dead in the water. There’s talk we might take it somewhere else.

“I haven’t had those conversations yet. I’m just taking a break from it right now.”

But Paddy won’t be short of work, as last season Brendan drafted him in as his co-writer on Mrs Brown — and he is currently working on ­penning two Christmas specials.   

He added: “We’re shooting those Mrs Brown Christmas specials in October so I’m concentrating on that.” 

Brendan, 70, had written over 50 ­episodes of Mrs Brown’s Boys before he decided to hire Paddy, who plays Dermot in the sitcom, to join him as a co-writer, based on the pilot script he penned for Shedites. 

Paddy said: “The BBC gave me a brilliant script editor to make the series, Paul Coleman, who’d worked on sitcoms like Car Share with Peter Kay so I’ve learned loads from him and I’ll have that experience to bring to my next sitcom. 

“I’ve loads of other TV ideas I haven’t had a chance to write yet and now I might just have the time.”

Former Mrs Brown star Rory Cowan blasted RTE last year over their decision not to air Shedites.
