Ethan Russo’s  Amid the national opioid addiction crisis, one of the oldest known compounds believed to ease pain is getting a second look from a small group of drugmakers and developers. It’s pot. While some studies suggest medical benefits from cannabis, most fall short of the gold standard of randomized clinical trials. The plant’s classification as a controlled substance and the spotty patchwork of state laws governing legality have limited the scope of the studies. “There is an unmet need for a cannabis-based medicine that has the hallmarks of a modern medicine: one that does not vary every time the patient takes it, [one where we have] a full understanding of its safety and efficacy against placebo, one that is fully characterized, [where the] interactions it may have with other drugs that patients are taking [are known],” said Stephen Schultz, VP of investor relations at GW Pharmaceuticals plc. The company is currently working on bringing the first whole-pla

Harry Mead: Why Mrs Brown should 'shut the f*** up'

TUNING in for the BBC’s Ten O’ Clock news I caught the last few minutes of Mrs Brown’s Boys. Don’t tell me you like it. It’s a mirror to our coarsening as a people. And I suppose we’re all infected. As the once-taboo F word spilled from the foul-mouthed matriarch’s lips seemingly in every other sentence, I was almost (but not quite) provoked to respond in kind and shout back at her: “Shut the f*** up.” EMBRACE: Tiger Roll ridden by jockey Davy Russell (right) wins the Randox Health Grand National Handicap Chase ahead of Pleasant Company ridden by jockey David Mullins  Picture: DAVID DAVIES/PA A NEWSPAPER report of last Saturday’s Grand National began: “As Davy Russell steered home the diminutive Tiger Roll to victory by a head, high in Aintree’s Princess Royal stand came the familiar confetti shower of ripped up betting slips from the disappointed punters who had backed other horses.” Perhaps before next

Unless you’ve been living in a nuclear bunker for the past 10 years, you’ve probably heard of the BBC sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys. The vast majority of us have been exposed to it, and it’s man-in-a-dress star Brendan O’Carroll. The Irish comedian, who plays the titular ‘mammy’ Mrs Agnes Brown, has been performing as his comedy creation since 1992.  His popular sitcom, which is about a family’s daily trials and tribulations (and, more importantly, what the dirty grandma has to say about them), has been running now for seven years. So what do we know about its cross-dressing protagonist, Brendan? Brendan, 62, was born in September 1955 in Finglas, Dublin, and his paternal grandfather was a prominent Irish republican.  When Brendan was seven his dad died, leaving his mum struggling to raise her children on little income.  He left school aged 12 and went on to have a number of different jobs before s
