Rory Cowan IS returning to Mrs Brown's Boys
A little back to story to why Rory Cowan left
“I really got very, very bored with it.”
The absence of Rory Cowan was arguably the biggest talking point following the Christmas and New Year specials of Mrs Brown’s Boys, which, once again, were amongst the most popular shows on TV over the festive period.
Cowan’s departure from the show came as a shock to fans when the news emerged during the summer and not everyone was enamoured by his replacement (Damien McKiernan) for specials which aired over Christmas.
Not that the reaction to ‘the new Rory’ had too much of an impact on the original Rory, mind, with Cowan revealing to Brenda Donohue on the Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ Radio One that he had begun to grow very tired of the role and had little interest in watching it in his absence.
“I wasn't curious (about watching his replacement) at all,” Cowan said.
“I'm passed it, I'm gone, I'm doing something else!”
Although he didn’t see the shows, Cowan still gave a fairly accurate summation of what actually happened in Mrs Brown’s Boys over Christmas.
The fact that Cowan was able to tell Brenda that Cathy was probably having trouble with a boyfriend, that Mrs. Brown and neighbour Winnie were still wondering whether or not Winnie's husband Jacko would be out of hospital in time for Christmas illustrated his frustration with his belief that the show had become predictable.
“These things are just there every single year, and it bored me,” Cowan said.
“Once it became a format on the BBC, you couldn't move out of that format, everything had to stay the same... and that became a bore to me, I didn't like it.
“I really got very, very bored with it.”
Cowan, who said he has no intention of returning to the role, did add that the show had been “great fun” to be a part of before it became tied to a format on the BBC and before the demands of performing it all over the world.
He also added that O’Carroll was a great employer and that leaving the financial security the show offered was not likely to have too much of an impact as a result.
“I was able to leave... to say if nothing ever turns up again it doesn't matter I can survive on what I put by,” Cowan added.
RORY COWANS REPLACEMENT
The new Rory is played by Damien McKiernan.
Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the name, chances are you’ve never spotted him on TV before now – at least not as an actor anyway. McKiernan was a professional snooker player back in the day, and it was during that time that he first met Brendan O’Carroll.
He tells RadioTimes.com that O’Carroll quite simply called him up one day to offer him the role.
“Brendan sent me a text asking me could I take a FaceTime call. 20 minutes later, he calls me, ‘Hi Omen’. That’s the nickname he has for me, which I love. He then disappears looking for his tea which he can’t find. He’s saying ‘where the hell is it, I definitely made a cup’, he then realises that his phone is leaning against his cup so he didn’t see it, it was so funny.”
After a fifteen minute conversation O’Caroll told McKiernan he thought he’d be great for the role and to have a think about it and let him know.
“I literally fell off the bed!” says McKiernan. “I was soooo excited, I thought about it, discussed it with my wife and my two boys, my wife couldn’t stop laughing and once she stopped she told me to go for it. So a few days later I texted Brendan and asked him if he could talk. He said ‘yes, ring me’. I said ‘no I’m outside your room in Newcastle!’. I wanted to see him and Jenny face to face to accept and to give them with a big hug!”
Keeping his new role a secret was tough, especially when he had to dye his hair blonde: “I just said I wanted a new look!”
The Dubliner admits that he was very nervous to join the cast for rehearsals. “It felt like I was jumping without a parachute, it was then I realised that OH MY GOD this is serious. I was so nervous” he explains.
“I just didn’t want to let anybody down. They are all such fantastic people with such warm hearts and I felt so much pressure to repay their belief in me.”
And when the time came to record the episode, he said everything felt “surreal”.
Rory Cowan is set to appear on All Round To Mrs Browns later this year. This is going to be a perfect collide with old and new Rory. This is only for 1 episode he is not returning for good.
That makes no sense at all and I really and truly belive as a fan of mbb that the old Rory will always be the best for the job.
ReplyDeleteI agree. He made the part his own. He was one of the best actors on the show. The new Rory is just ok. It can be hard filling somebody else's shoes. He had a big smile and was so exuberant most the time. The new Rory was completely different. It's like it was a different role.
DeleteIn life at times we all do things we dont like or want to do,point being you said being part of show was great fun,you got well paid but you became bored with formatt.
ReplyDeleteI reckon you were prob well paid done a first class job at playing your character and brought happiness and many a tear of laughter to the audience and viewers at home.Your public love you and want you back, why turn your back so many people what you brought to that show in my opion cannot be replaced you have removed that special moment of surprise and laughter when you swanned into the scene ,this is and will be sorely missed.
